Yet another “How To” article on Backcountry.com, this one concerning the bane of all out-of-shape backcountry skiers: heavy gear. While the tone of this piece is definitely sales-centered, I can testify personally to the effectiveness of a tech binding setup for touring. Tech bindings make a huge difference on the way up, compared to Fritschi, Marker, or any other hybrid DH/tour bindings, and I have skied them enough both in and out of the resort to know that they have the stiffness to perform on the way down as well. Currently, I’m running an older version of the Dynafit Radical FT on a pair of Moment Exit World skis. It’s a great pairing as far as weight versus performance, with the total package tipping the scales at around ten pounds. Now, if I can only find a pair of touring boots that ski as well as they walk…
